Color Contrast and QR Code Scannability
Custom-colored QR codes look great on branded materials, but poor contrast between foreground and background modules causes scan failures. The minimum contrast ratio for reliable scanning is 3:1, though 4.5:1 meets WCAG AA standards.
Dark modules on light backgrounds scan best. Avoid light-colored QR codes on dark backgrounds unless you invert with caution and test extensively. Never use similar hues for foreground and background.
Brand colors can work beautifully when properly contrasted. Navy on cream, dark green on white, and burgundy on light gray all scan reliably. Use our contrast checker to validate your color choices before printing.
Higher error correction levels (Q or H) tolerate some contrast reduction and allow logo overlays, but they shouldn't be a substitute for adequate contrast. Always test with multiple devices and scanning apps.
For accessibility compliance, aim for WCAG AA (4.5:1) or AAA (7:1) contrast ratios. This ensures both scannability and readability for users with visual impairments.
